I just got a smokey joe for free - its must be an older model, it has a wooden handle on the lid - after a nice cleaning it looks pretty good - is there supposed to be 2 grates - 1 for charcoal and 1 for cooking?

Congrats! Yes, there should be two grates, just like a regular Weber kettle. Im assuming this old smokey joe is a 14" like the newer ones? If so replacement grates are available at Lowes or HD (around here anyway) or directly from Weber.

It is the 14". I called weber and they told me they needed the part or unit number from the top vent and might replace both grates for nothing

just got off the phone with the weber people and they agreed to send me both grates,standard shipping for free

Now thats a score! Talk about customer service. Have fun with that free joe!
