I have been eating way to much of the food that this site has inspired to make. I've gotten in the habit of eating whatever and however much I wanted. Not good. I've been easing into the South Beach Diet this week with the plan to start seriously on Monday. I have found breakfast to be the hardest meal for me. I wake up hungry and I just grab something that may or may not be on the plan. Anybody been on this? Any ideas or tips that helped you?

My wife and I tried it and some other family members also. It doesn't last. First of all your body needs carbs regardless what the diet says. You wake up hungry because you are. You are dipriving your body of food that it needs. And if I remember right it also told you to stay away from fruit. Nobody in the world is ever going to convince me fruit is not good for you. You can eat anything as long as you don't pig out. Portion size is the way to go. Hey, if it works for you great but don't knock yourself if it doesn't. These of course are just my opinions. I'm sure some may disagree with me.

i'm not sure about south beach but with atkins fruit is only off limits during the 1st two phases. as you slowly start adding carbs(good ones) back into your diet you can have fruit. most people don't really know how atkins works. you only severly limit your carbs for the 1st phase(14 days) then start adding them back into your diet gradually until you stop losing weight. and yes your body needs carbs but they don't need to come from pasta, bread, flour or refined sugar. vegetables have all the carbs a person really needs.
edit.. the best thing you can do is research both and see if either would fit you and then get the book and read the WHOLE thing before you start. i decided on atkins and it worked great for me but i fell off the wagon and went back to my old ways. i've been back on it for a few weeks now and am starting to lose again. the 1st time i did it i was 6 months into quiting smoking and just went back to eating everything and anything i wanted. now i'm 3 years and 3 months smoke free and am going to give it another go. no matter what diet or lifestyle you chose, excercise is a must.

Me and my wife have both done the south beach diet. We lasted for about 3 weeks each. We both lost weight and gained more back. I have done a bunch of research on the subject and Weight Watchers always comes back as the best way to go. There is no reason to go to meetings unless your into that. It really just gets you to eat the amount you are supposed to eat. The point counting can get annoying but after 2 weeks you have a good idea of what to do and can do it without writing everything down. My wife follows it activly to maintain her weight and she eats evrything that I cook. Check it out.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have done both of these diets before. In both diets you just limit most carbs for the first phase and then you reintroduce them into your diet. With Atkins it seems you can eat anything as long as it doesnt have carbs. South Beach wants you to eat lean meats and seafood plus good carbs. No processed foods. This seems like something I could do. Neither diet wants you to get hungry. Thats my fault for not eating enough and or not having something within the plan ready for when its time to eat. I have lots of recipes in the books. I was hoping someone on here might have had some sucess and maybe some good recipes or tips.
J- my wife does WW and she really does good at it but she is better at going to meetings and getting into that routine. I thought about trying it but I know that I wouldnt go.

the only thing that works is a change in life style. portion control with walking will do wonders. fruit can be eaten and veggies are a hunger killer and good for you. thats it. those snacks have to go for sure !

That is exactly right. I don't know anyone who went on "diets" and stayed on them...including me. Also don't forget about the alcohol.
