So, I get-up early this a.m. to brine the 22 and 19 lb. birds I have in the garage fridge and to my surprise, someone didn't shut the door on the fridge last night when they went out to the garage to get a bottle of water when we have perfectly good water from our inside fridge and I should know because I recently purchased the $50 filter for the FRIDGE!!!!

Man am I steamed. I think the 22 lb bird my SO's brother brought for me to do is borderline OK as it was frozen when I put it in the fridge last Thurs. and still had some ice inside the bird but my Fresh Natural Free Range bird is in the garbage can. Schmidt!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Any thoughts on the ham? I think it should be OK, it's pre-cooked.

I'd make the guilty party eat liver only for dinner, and then have to clean up everything. Now I know there are lots of us older folks that really enjoy liver, but I have yet to meet a young person who can really enjoy liver; and then have to clean up everyones mess afterwards...
I still like my rope idea better.

Well I spoke with the Ham company and they say the ham should be fine.

Punishment, to borrow from a famous Seinfeld episode, "NO Q FOR YOU!"

It's good to see that you have calmed down brother. I know what you can have him do...
have him clean your garage and separate all your grilling stuff from the other stuff and then do it again and again until he gets the message. Better not have him touch your grilling things, that could prove to be a disaster in the making. At least you know where everything is and when someone else gets their hands involved, that's when things get lost.

No one is touching my grilling stuff. Last time someone had good intentions and tried to organize my grilling stuff I ended up with a big box of wood chunks vs. the three boxes I previously had containing apple, red oak and cherry (each in it's own box). Now I have what I call a grab box of smoke wood for those surprise cooks; you know the one where you're not sure if you're getting red oak or cherry wood? Intentions were good, outcome for me sucked.

Wait until they tell you where they want to go to school, the car they want to buy, the clothes they need, the computer they have to have, what their ideas are about making a living. It gets worse.

Yea.....and then they move 1000 miles away and you would give ANYTHING to have them back under your roof [or at least within a 30 minute drive] again. Yep, the older they get, past say 19, the smarter you get. But they don't change all of their ways! Some thing never do change, but most do. Hang in there!. Parenting is a life sentence.

What was the bird temp and the outside temp overnight?

Depending upon the temp of the brine / ambient temp of air / volume of water / starting temp of bird... etc I could see a scenario where the bird could still be below 40 degrees even with a fridge door left opened...

Oh, but if you were air drying it or just storing it... it is less likely...

Then again, where I am it is in the low 30's at night so I would be more worried about it freezing.

The birds were in their original packaging and had yet to go in the brine. The larger bird was a previously frozen bird that thank goodness hadn't completly thawed. The fresh bird felt cool to the touch but not cold. It was maybe low 50's outside so 60s in the garage. Figured I'd rather be safe then sorry.
