I got my Smoky Joe just about 2 months ago and have cooked on it 3 times. Last night I noticed the handle was very loose and rusting! As soon as my wife finds the receipt, I'm gonna give Weber a call.

Kinda looks like what happens when you leave a Weber outside, uncovered, exposed to rain and the elements. Which is probably why my 18.5" kettle handle looks just like that, and my WSM, which is always kept dry under cover, does not.

How many Karachi wings do you expect one little grill to be able to handle?

Rut Roh? Oh? I second that.

Looks like rust where the handle and the kettle comes together...a lot like mine. I took these pics a couple weeks ago, but never posted them. My pics are from the lid of my stainless steel Performer. Granted, my Performer is a lot older than Larry's SJ. I had to buy a replacement lid, about $40 with S&H. I'm not complaining. I've had my grill for upwards of 8 years now, and have gotten far more out of it than the $200 I paid for it new. I'm curious to see how this pans out.

I've had my Weber outside for 8 years, and this just happened. But for that to happen after such a short period of time as Larry's, is really odd.

Doug, my two WSMs and Performer are all kept outside and uncovered, in the elements, because I'm lazy! Eeker Sure they have a bit of rust here and there, but all look better than my 2 month old little fella..... Frowner

Yes, I agree George. But, I know I wasn't the cause of the stress.

We'll see what Weber says, either way I'll make the handle work, if I have to get it re-welded or drill some holes and put screws through it.

If it's only a couple months old I'm thinking Weber is going to give you one.

impact damage. If weber gives you one it'll be due to their no questions asked policy.

I suppose wert I Mr Weber & it was 2 months fine, give him a new lid. But either weber accidentally put an explosive between the steel & porceline, or something fell on it.

JMHO, of course.

I think Larry would know if he dropped the lid or dropped something on it.....Looks like it was defective out of the box (maybe damaged in shipping)....I dont know if you bought it online or at a store like Home Depot but if you did get it at the Depot, I am sure they would take it back and give you a new lid.

Brian, now I see it your way. Thanks for putting things in perspective.

Now for me to go to the Ford dealership - this **** truck has 3 small dents that *I* surely didn't put in. Plus my "new" tires have somehow worn down to a lesser level than when I first bought them. They don't look new anymore.

Somebody better make this right for me.

You got my back too, right?

If Weber suffers abuses & is forced to move it's production to China I suppose that's OK, heck, it's the American Way.
