we missed you Bill. I assume the weather scared you away?

Congrats to J Lopa and his Butt Hutt on their first time out! They certainly showed us up. It proves the point that an experienced bbq'r can be right up there with experienced competitors (unfortunately we're neither Roll Eyes).

We had the pleasure of competing next to Big Bob's Backyard BBQ, who were also first time competing, and also had way more experience bbq'ing then we did. They sneaked into the top 10 ahead of some serious teams on the merits of well cooked meat.

Our team highlight was making up our chicken recipe on friday after an interesting experimental run in the afternoon. The actual implementation didn't go as planned, but we got 5th and recorded a personal best.

Our low point had to be our ribs. At last year's oink they took 3rd, and the only tweak I've made since was to seriously sweeten the sauce. With the new sauce we scored a personal best, so we thought we were in excellent shape to do better at this years oink. It was not to be, our ribs tanked and we got two comments that both mentioned that the ribs were overly sweet.

one of these years George is going to figure out that we compete as nickel city smokerS. Mad

I'm wondering how many more emails its going to take to get him to change it.

Congrats Jeff on the Chicken, sorry for the other placements. Live and learn I guess. Watch, next year sweet sauces will be in. You just never know with the judges. Wish I could have stopped in, maybe next year, LOL.

no doubt. the rochester and boston hills comps were brand new and probably had a bunch of rookie judges. I guess I shouldn't have based my recipe on results from either.

Hopefully we can find a recipe that will generate some success and stick with it. unfortunately we don't compete enough to see long term trends.

Since I have the ear of the local vwbb members...I have intentions of ordering/purchasing a case of pork bellies from hoelscher's on delaware in kenmore. I was thinking it might be in our best bacon making interest to have a few of us go in on a case, that way we might be able to get some momentum going with this butcher.

btw, I can't say how excited I am about our chicken. It been a serious point of irritation for me (just ask mr kruger about my incessant emails to him).

I finally feel like we have something we can work with.

now that our pork and chicken are trending upwards, and our ribs pretty consistent, I'm thinking we're getting somewhere.

brisket's still a mystery and trending downnnnn, but at least I know whats wrong with it. whether I can fix it remains to be seen.

Ya, I don't mind chipping in on meat of any kind, if it makes it cheaper for all of us. Well, maybe not Moose or Swordfish. But ya, part of the reason why I bought a freezer for the basement is to be able to load up when the getting is good. You have my email, just let me know the details.

excellent news!

only bad thing is that my wife thinks I have too many irons in the fire and said I couldn't have another hobby. Little does she know that making bacon isn't a mere hobby, its a way of life. Razzer

I'll be in touch via email.

thanks Dale. we were hoping for more, but aren't we all? Wink

we scored a 629 last year here and it was good enough to get us 6/50, this year it wouldn't even of got us to 15th.

we've competed against about 2/3 of these teams before, and by my pre-comp estimates, we'd have to do a personal best to crack the top 10. I would have liked to get there, as it was my goal this year, but were aren't too disappointed.

A lot of these teams are sniffing around the top of the NYS leader board, so when they all rolled into my hometown, I didn't give us much of a chance.
