I am considering buying a nu-temp remote thermometer to monitor temp in kettle grills. Has anyone used one in their kettle? Do you run the wire under the lid? If so, how much of a gap does it create and does it kink the wire at all?

Matt, I use a Maverick ET-73 and run the wires under the lid. I don't notice any gap at all. Maybe the grill gunk keeps it sealed up.

Note there will be a significant difference in the temps at the grill and at the vent.

Here's a link to some pics:

Be careful, I've burned out a probe doing this (accidently, of course). Wrap the wire in foil, it'll give you more leeway when using higher grill temps.
