A little over a year ago I purchased a OTS thinking I'll most likely use only 3 or 4 times a year (since I have a WSM and a Genesis gasser). As it turns out I'm using it more than I thought. Does anyone know if it's possible to order the ash catcher from a OTG to fit my OTS? I get ash everywhere on winding days and it's starting to annoy me. Thanks.

I don't know about that. I ditched my OTS, it was old anyway, this year in favor of a OTG just because I always thought that tray was pretty lame. Using those three clips was a pain as well. The ash catcher on the OTG holds plenty and is easy to take out and put back in place.
Contact Weber and they'll tell you if it's possible

I had heard that you can't convert a OTS to a OTG, but I'm not sure. Perhaps someone else might have the answer.

In the mean time, if you can find a metal bowl with high sides to rest on the ash catcher, it might stop a lot of the ashes from blowing around.

Seen people use a clay flower pot also as an ash catcher.

a conversion really can't be done. there are tabs and such welded on. cheaper to get a gold on craigslist. many mods have been used. anything that is wide and deep and will fit.
some have put a wide bucket on the bottom with the try removed. i'm just gonns rivet some sheet metal on to make it a bit wider. as to those clips i just removed the one on the front leg. at the correct height i drilled a hole through the leg so i could put a nail through. now i just pull the nail out a bit amd the try comes right out. easy.

The ash catcher assembly on the OTG I bought last year hooks into notches cut in the sides of the leg posts, I believe I read the newer OTS's have those notches also. Check page 4 of the manual below, you can see how the assembly is attached.

If you have the notches cut in your legs you should be good, if not, you'd need to perform some cutting on the grill to make it work.

Bill, you are correct. I called Weber and they said it can't be done. Someone in the family next spring will get a free, gently used OTS.

Don't wait till fall to buy a OTG. Many stores are clearing out grills for the winter. Target has a number of Weber grills on sale at 75% off. Buy now and put the box away until next summer.

My local target had a couple of 18" silvers. I guess I should look for the next nearest. Thanks.
