Afford? What's this afford stuff? That's not the American way. That's why plastic was invented. (Maybe I can preorder my next three paychecks)

All right, you mulletheads! I just ordered the new 18" WSM. It'll be my first, but after hearing so much great stuff about it, I had to get it. Convinced myself not to get the 22" just due to the fact that I'm usually just cooking for family and friends. I've had numerous grills/smokers over the years, but none have lived up to my expectations. Sounds like this one may be the last one I'll need for a while.

Meat... it starts with mmmm!

Is anyone concerned about the challenges Chris had with keeping temps up for longer cooks? I'm not a big fan of adding fuel during a cook, although I must admit the larger door may make that much easier.

Good point. That is the only reason I have not pulled the trigger on a 22 yet! I'm sure one could make a piedmont style waterless set up to extend cook times, but I'm waiting.

No...I've been cooking on homemade magnums for the last 4 years and his experiences with temps and cook times are very similar to what I've experienced. They are not much different issues than my Caldera Tallboy either.

I would not expect the much larger smoker volume and increased pounds of meat to consume the same amount of fuel as the current WSM.

I find that one similar problem in the magnums I use is that when I use a lot of fuel, it creates a lot of ash. At the end of long cooks it becomes hard to keep up temps - even with fresh fuel added - because of the ash. (I also keep those running for days at a time, so I use a water-filled shop-vac, gerry-rigged with a metal tube and screen on the end to vacuum out the ash once a day.)

I would expect much bigger smoke rings though. Big Grin

No Piedmont for me on my current 18" WSM for over 6 years, Just a foil lined stock pan. I have no worries about fuel issues on long cooks. I'm confident my Humphreys lump is up for the job. No worries with ash either. Why isn't it here yet. Frowner
